IS THERE A MOVIE INDUSTRY IN GHANA?
Wednesday, 21 Jul 2010
The resurrection of the Movie Industry in recent times has received rousing applause by Ghanaians both at home and abroad. The likes of Agya Koo, Nana Ama Mcbrown, Van Vicker among others have been at the fore-front of this resurrection which has given many Ghanaians reasons to shed off some stress at homes and in cinemas. Viewers are now served with captivating, thrilling and sometimes jaw-breaking movies by our stars. They haven’t only made us proud by reviving the industry which was totally in shackles but have also made it all the way to Nollywood and even Hollywood.
Many Ghanaians can now attest to the fact that there is indeed a movie industry in Ghana of which we can all be proud. The efforts by productions houses such as Venus films, Sparrow productions, Nyankontong Films among others have forced the influx of Nigerian movies out of our market.

The likes of Jackie Appiah, John Domelo, Yvonne Nelson, Nadia Buari just to mention a few have virtually taken over from Genevieve, Jim Iyke, Omotola and their colleagues in Nollywood.Nollywood's super star actor R.M.D confirmed on Net2 TV last year how Ghanaian movie stars such as Jackie Appiah are celebrated in Nigeria and this many consider to be great news for” Ghallywood.”
Talking about Ghallywood, is there anything like that? Do we have a Ghallywood in Ghana? Well I have seen a couple of movies with the inscription “Ghallywood” which seeks to suggest that Ghana indeed has a movie industry she can boast of but the experts however think otherwise.
Speaking on the Solid Gold Countdown on Radio Gold last Saturday, Mr.Theophilus Akatugba, the C.E.O of Point Blank Media Concepts and president of Creative Lands School of Films and Media Arts explained that there is nothing like a movie industry in Ghana and blamed it on mediocrity which he said has bedeviled us so much into assuming that we have an industry.

“The tragedy of our time is that we assume that we know everything and everyone practices anything,” he said.
According to Mr. Akatugba, we only make video productions here in Ghana and not movies.”What we have is a resemblance of activities called movie makers,” he added. He further explained that the knowledge or know-how of the movie industry couldn’t be found even in the hands of the very known names and therefore we couldn’t refer to it as a movie industry.

Mr.Akatubga was however hopeful that with training we could always get there because training according to him makes one a performer and the man that brings written characters to life. He advised actors and actresses to constantly seek training to curb the habit of repeating themselves in every movie leaving the scripts unplayed.
